Guitar Hero III

By: Peter Gruetzmacher

On October 28th of this year Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will be released in stores. Earlier this year, sometime in May, Activision bought out RedOctane, the original publisher of Guitar Hero I and II. There may be a few changes because of the new ownership, but these will only be in the way the game is produced and sold; it won't affect the actual game in any way.

Guitar Hero III will still have the ability to play guitar or bass in cooperative mode, which will now be able to be played as career mode too. According to the Rolling Stone, Guitar Hero III will contain most, or all, of the previous characters in number 2 plus a few newly introduced characters as well.
Activision is planning to release this game for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Mac, and PC. The Xbox 360, and mosty likely Mac and PC, versions will allow you to download new multi-player tracks off of the online store, which brought in more than 2 million dollars from the online store for Guitar Hero II.

The game will feature a new multi-player game mode called Battle Mode. Battle mode will include many different distractions, known as attacks.
The attacks are:

Broken string: One fret button on the opponent's guitar will not work until it is fixed (by rapidly tapping the button).
Difficulty up: The opponent will play the song on an increased difficulty for a short duration of time (except for expert difficulty).
Amp overload: The fret board will shake and appear blurry, making the scrolling notes difficult to read.
Whammy bar: The opponent will have to use the whammy bar before he/she can play notes again.
Steal power: This will steal your opponent's power-up (this will be lost if used when the opponent has no power-up).
Double notes: The opponent will have to play any single note as a two-button chord, and any two-button chord as a three-button chord for a short amount of time.
Lefty flip: The fret board will be mirrored, requiring the player to switch their handedness on the guitar.
Death Drain: This power-up is only available in Sudden Death mode. Once activated, your opponent's Rock Meter will rapidly drain on its own.
